The American Study “The Smart Audio Report” conducted by the NPR and the Edison Research Center underlines the enthusiasm of Americans for smart speakers!
Today, about 39 million Americans own one at home, a figure in up 128% since January 2017 . Amazon’s Echo speaker is the one that has won over most people, with 11% having one. Google products are far behind, only 4% of the population owns a Google Home product.
Both companies took advantage of the holiday season to gain market share by breaking their price. Amazon’s enclosure was sold for $ 29 and the Google Home Mini for $ 50. It is thanks to these important reductions that Amazon took the lead on Google. The end of the year has played an important role in the process of purchasing these products. 7% of Americans surveyed confirmed that they bought their first speaker between Black Friday and the end of December.
“Smart Home” features were used by 64% of those surveyed to be used to control their devices at home.
66% of these speakers are a way to entertain friends and family by playing music, asking questions or getting the news of the day.
The way to use the speaker can thus change the behavior of individuals. 30% of people who own a speaker recognize that the time spent "with" the speaker replaces the one spent in front of the TV. On the contrary, podcasts or radio are more expensive than before.
44% use the speaker’s voice assistants on their phone. Amazon could add Alexa to the Amazon Alexa app where users can now manage different settings. This idea was submitted to Steve Rabuchin, Vice President of Alexa who confided with a smile "This is an interesting idea".
Finally, this study shows that as time goes by, the speakers are more and more used. 51% agree to use it more than the first month.
